Miniature Charm Quilts

These miniature quilts are truly traditional charm quilts suitable for inch to the foot scale. No two are alike. Each signed and numbered. Each block (equivalent to a 6" "charm") is a different fabric, 195 different fabrics in a "full size" bed quilt. All of my quilts are made from scraps, many from friends. Because the fabrics are scraps, I must handle each piece separately from cutting and arranging to sewing. The hand quilting is kept simple to preserve flexibility. Cotton or wool batting. allows the quilts to be formed with steam to the bed in the doll house.
* Size approx. 6 3/4 x 7 3/4 " without borders.
* Available in 5 designs.
* $150 each shipping included. Payment with order.

One Of A Kind Quilts

These miniature quilts are scrap quilts. I do not cut larger pieces into smaller ones to make my minis. They are made from the pieces left after the larger pieces are cut. I cut squares from large (4 1/2") to small (1 ") and then use the pieces which are less that one inch to make minis also. I sign and number each top as I finish it. I have made over 50 minis to date. (I do make large size quilts also.) Photographs of additional quilts are available for preview. Sizes range from 2x3" to 8x10". Price range $150 - $500.

Amish Fish is made of 1" square fish. It developed because I had enough black triangles to make the tails. It is quilted in black thread with a fish in each fish and a double wave in the spaces between.

Baskets The little squares in the baskets are 1/4 inch. I made this traditional pattern just to prove that I can be constrained. I much prefer the added excitement of variations in the sizes of the pieces. However, I did let the sashing be free. I took out the precise sashing because I didn't like it.

Insanity is named because everyone who sees it says, "I'd go crazy trying to do that." The squares around the edges are 1/4 inch. The strings in the center are 1/8 inch. The strings were pieced with flip and sew on a paper foundation which was then removed. I didn't like it very much, so this may be the only one I make with that method. The border is quilted in a chevron pattern, the center with a 3/4 inch clamshell.

Spinning Strings is pieced with 3 strings in each 1/2"+ square. The variation is deliberate. I was making quilts like this, and like Early Summer, for a long time. It was a relief to me to find that there is a name for this free, no template, piecing. Nancy Crow's work gave me the category "improvisational".

Early Summer is another improvisational quilt. I have several others as of this writing. They are the ones that excite me so I am sure there will be more all the time.

The next four quilts are broidery perse. The design is composed of pieces of printed fabric appliquéed to a backing. One of the challenges of designing minis with this method is finding prints where the design is both small enough and clear enough to use. Many of the design elements (birds, flowers) are individually placed and appliquéed. Then the ground fabric is cut away from behind the applied pieces and the quilt top pressed. Then the "quilt sandwich" is basted together and quilted. The last step is binding the edges. This is the technique which led me into minis.

Rose Rings is outline quilted with a trapunto chain between the rings of roses.

Rose Swag is outline quilted with a 1/2" diagonal square background. Each bird in individually appliquéed.

Flower Bush is similar to the vase of flower appliqué quilts as well as traditional tree of life. It is outline quilted with a 1/4" diagonal square background.

Tree of Life is made with a Liberty of London print because I like the birds. It is outline quilted with a 3/8" diamond background.
